About us.

The aim of the South African Society of Ophthalmic Nurses (SASON) is to offer a support network for all nurses working in the field of ophthalmology through the provision of a forum for communication and continuing education.

We are affiliated to the Ophthalmological Society of South Africa (OSSA).

Objectives:
  1. to promote the improvement of the care and service given to the patient by Ophthalmic nurses
  2. to encourage the exchange of technical and professional information between members
  3. to co-operate with other bodies with similar aims
  4. to achieve progress for ophthalmic nursing in all areas ,e.g. education, health service delivery
  5. to represent ophthalmic nursing at local, provincial, national and international levels.
We would like to increase our members and establish provincial committees in all the provinces.

The Free State, Northern Cape and Western Cape year programmes include study mornings, participation in national eyecare awareness week.

We also encourage our members to attend the OSSA and SASCRS Congresses to enhance their learning experiences.
Reasons to become a member

To keep abreast of new developments in the field of ophthalmology.
Professional and personal development through continuing education and opportunities to deliver papers and share research findings.
Network with nursing colleagues in this specialised field.
Reduced registration fees for congresses.
Financial support may be granted to assist members to attend educational events.

Membership fees

The annual registration fee of R 120 shall become due on 31 March of each year.

Membership categories.

Ordinary membership
All categories of nurses: professional, enrolled nurses and nursing auxiliaries who are actively involved in Ophthalmic nurses and registered with the South African Nursing Council.

Honorary membership

Retired or semi-retired ophthalmic nurses not actively practicing.

Associate membership
Organizations or companies involved in fields of ophthalmology, community health workers, traditional health practitioners and nurses outside the borders of South Africa, practicing in the field of ophthalmology and ophthalmic nursing.
