Company Profile

Alcon South Africa’s head office, Bryanston, Johannesburg

As the global leader in eye care, Alcon’s mission is to provide innovative products that enhance quality of life by helping people see better. This mission means that Alcon’s more than 22,000 associates strive to make significant contributions to preserve, restore and enhance vision.

Through the merger of Novartis and Alcon, uniting the strengths of Alcon, CIBA VISION and Novartis Ophthalmics into one eye care business, Alcon has become the second largest division of Novartis. With these collective resources and scale, Alcon now offers the widest spectrum of eye care products in surgical, pharmaceutical and vision care across 180 markets and runs operations in 75 countries.

Since the implementation of the new commercial model in the second half of 2011, the Alcon business is aligned as follows:
  • The Surgical business will continue to provide equipment, instruments, disposable products and intraocular lenses for surgical procedures that address cataracts, vitreoretinal conditions, glaucoma and refractive errors.
  • The Pharmaceutical business will combine Alcon’s broad range of pharmaceuticals with selected products from Novartis Ophthalmics (excluding Lucentis®). The Pharmaceutical business will also oversee the line of professionally driven over-the-counter brands in artificial tears and ocular vitamins.
  • The Vision Care business combines the CIBA VISION portfolio of contact lenses and lens care products with Alcon’s market-leading contact lens solution portfolio.

Alcon South Africa employs 105 people. As well as its Bryanston head office, Alcon has a second major office in Cape Town, and smaller, satellite offices in Durban, KZN and the Free State. The young, vibrant management team based at head office is headed by General Manager, Piérre Bosch, who took over the leadership reigns in 2002. Piérre’s Executive Management team comprises of Financial Director Pieter Watson, Head of Human Resources, Estelle Carstens, Regulatory Affairs Manager Suzanne Roe and Business Unit Managers for Surgical, Pharmaceutical and Vision Care respectively, Gordon Von Sichart, Tim Borland and Mughammad Sallie.
